July 29, 2013- Matias Romero

July 29, 2013

Hey guys sounds like you had a good first week of school and everything. It was a pretty rough week here in Matias. Pablo another investigator got back this week from vacation and we had a lesson with him and it was awesome cause he remembered the whole plan of salvation, restoration and evangelio de Jesus Christ. So that was awesome that he remembered that. He’s got a baptism fecha for the 24th. He’s awesome though, he lived in the South Carolina most of his life and has this deep south accent, but he was also a left tackle in high school and he always likes to talk about the SC gamecocks with me(he’s a big Marcus Lattimore fan Carson). So that was a bright spot in this week. My companion is awesome. I’m learning a lot cause he’s really shy and so I definitely have to do a lot more talking haha. But we get a long great. But ya so that’s what’s going on here.

Sounds like you guys are all doing good and stuff. Ryan- thats awesome you got bro wilcox! who are the rest of your teachers? Abby- My favorite thing to do is get people to go to church. It doesn’t happen often enough though haha. Kyle- Keep your head up when you tackle. Carson- wow way to leave me hanging with your letter. Hey, have a fun senior year alright? Mom- Health is good. my backpacks good. Sounds like band is going good haha that’s funny Kyle’s in your class. Dad- haha some of the people here want to talk to you on facebook. haha they thinks it weird you speak Spanish haha. but ya I gave them my facebook address and stuff so look for a message to you on there.

A kid just sat down next to me with a parrot on his shoulder. Love you guys have a good week!

July 22, 2013- Matias Romero

So this week I got another companion, his name is Elder Davis and he’s from Honduras. I don’t know what happened the last couple weeks but I think they readjusted the whole mission cause there was a ton of special changes. But ya so that’s what happened with that.
This week was a really slow week with all the changes and stuff. I’ve pretty much just been trying to teach my comp the area and some of the key people here. I’m sorta learning that I’m in one of the harder areas of the mission but it’s good. Elder Davis said it’s good that this is the first place I started cause it will only make things easier when I go to other areas. We have two baptismal dates set right now with Robert and Pablo. The problem is getting them to go to church. The joke here in Mexico is that it’s easier to baptize someone than it is to get them to church haha. but we had 30 people in the capilla for sacrament yesterday, so that was a little improvement(even though the records say there are about 300 members here.) We also found a new investigator named Jesus whose about 40 and asked if he could go on a mission too haha. He’s progressing really fast and he can’t get enough of the gift of the Holy Ghost. He’s always asking questions about it and wanting to learn more. So ya hopefully he gets a fecha set this week! Sounds like you are all doing great! I got a letter yesterday from the Johnson’s(it was dated like 2 months ago) But thank you for the stickers Lauren! All the little kids really like them haha and Raena the Tlayudas here are incredible. Best food in the world!
Have a great Week! Elder Sawyer

Abby- There are iguanas everywhere and they get really big! In the city you can actually buy iguana tacos!
I eat sopa every day for comida(they eat one monster lunch at 2:00) lots of tacos tlayudsa, empanadas, chicken and spaghetti. Also tons of fruits I’ve never heard of or seen like nanches and  guabana.
And they put salsa on everything, even the popsicles!

July 16, 2013- Happy Birthday in Matias Romero!

I was so excited to open my email and find pictures from Andrew on a Wednesday. He's waiting for a new companion, so President Leyva gave him some time to email pictures, no "talking" though!
I assume this is what he bought with his birthday money- everyone needs a Lucha de libre mask!!

Elder Sawyer and Gilberto or Alberto (in the yellow) and Elder Caudillo in the front. Hopefully next week he'll share some names with us!
He did title this photo "el tigre tacos last night"

we did notice that he used $26 for his birthday dinner- buys a lot of food for 8 hungry young men
birthday cake made by his zone.
notice the "candle" made out of toilet paper!

July 15, 2013- Matias Romero- Zone Conference

from the mission Facebook page: Misión México~Oaxaca Tierra de milagros
"The Lord has given us the blessing to return home safely from a 6 day trip through many zones of the mission. I had the privilege to meet many of the good and beautiful sisters from the Relief Society, and give a talk-workshop about the use of fresh vegetables in the meals! It was a wonderful experience. We also traveled to Cuajinicuilapa, (Friendly nicknamed "Cuaji"), the farthest point in the mission, and I loved to know it and visit the house of my elders who work there!! By the afternoon I will share an album of pictures of this beautiful trip. I invite you to check it out!"

Angela's baptism- July 13, 2013
Elder Sawyer & Elder Caudillo

Hey guys,  sounds like you’re doing great! Thanks for the happy birthdays! This week was a really good (and really hard week). First things first, Angela got baptized on Friday! It was cool because she was the first investigator when I got here so that was awesome to see her follow her kids and choose to be baptized. It’s crazy how much their family has gone through in the last couple months and it’s awesome to see them in church together, all baptized. The other awesome cool things are the twins. They’ve decided they want to go on the mission in a year and they literally help us with everything! They share the gospel with all their friends and its awesome cause I think everyone in Matias knows them. ya but two of their friends have baptism dates set(Pablo, Robert). Their friends all have seen how much these two have changed and want the same thing. but ya i love those guys there awesome.

Dad I have two favorite teaching methods. 1 letting the twins do it all  2. saying things that make sense in Spanish  haha. But Elder caudillo is helping me out a ton! He is so awesome! He reminds me of Jared. But ya I’m learning way quick with him, It’s like in the movie Glory Road when the one guy is failing a class so his mom comes and sits behind him and whenever the teacher asks a question she says "my son can answer that”. So ya that’s pretty much how it was for three hours at a zone conf (and in every lesson) haha but I love him!

It’s nice having a Mexican comp cause everything is cheaper and he knows where to eat. I asked him the other day "hey, let’s get some tacos over there" and he just laughs and says I’d be dead before I got home haha. but ya I’m definitely a lot more street smart with him. but ya he’s from somewhere close to Cancun. It would take me like 30 minutes to spell it. This week I went on splits with  the zone leader in my area. Elder Caudillos is the district leader and it’s him that’s usually supposed to go, but he didn’t know the areas (neither did I) so I got to be District leader for the day and make sure everyone got there baustismo interviews so that was an interesting day, but I definitely learned a lot. My areas big cause there’s tons of pueblitos (like little villages on the outskirts of town. like 3 world country places).  but we mainly focus in centro.

It sounds like you guys are doing good. I know Carson and Kyle are probably dead right now at football camp (i hope they didn’t take their cell phones haha) Ryan good luck at band tryouts, you’ll do awesome. Abby, yes it is fun to baptize people. and that’s awesome you’re playing the piano Mom- I’m healthy and everything’s good. hips good, just a nice scar. not on any medicine. I’m getting really fat and skinny at the same time.  nope, no microwave but our fridge started working again!

This week we had about 15 people in church (rough week church wise). Oh and I also gave my 4th talk in church, so we have a little incentive to reactivate some people. Dad- as long as they have Germaine and Schureman they’re always gonna have a shot at winning. I know there D coordinator and he’s great too. I love reading the Book of Mormon stories in Spanish, cause there’s so much more to learn in a different language and different meanings. I just got my birthday haircut an hour ago, for less than a dollar haha um, and I might take some money out tomorrow night for a birthday party. I’ll send pics haha!

love you guys, keep doing what you’re doing!

July 9, 2013- Matias Romero

Hey guys so had a good week last week! I just picked up my new companion Elder Caudillo from the bus station. I was way excited and nervous to have a comp that only speaks Spanish. It’s gonna be an interesting week since he doesn’t know any of the area or people and I barely do. But it’s gonna be good. We have a baptism set for this week for Angela(it’s the mom of that other girl from facebook) and were hoping it goes through. It’s hard with her because she’s a nurse and has a really random and crazy schedule, so pray that everything works out. We also set another baptism with one of the twins friends! he’s awesome and its cool cause he’s really seen how much his friends have changed and improved and he wants the same help. These two guys are awesome, we always bring them to lessons and you would never have known they were baptized a couple weeks ago. It’s just hard to explain these people here in words cause their real people and it’s just so hard to explain everything about them but their just awesome.! Well wish me luck with Spanish and being companero mayor este semana! Love ya guys!

I’m still doing good(hma Leyva calls like every day and asks what I’ve had for breakfast) haha ya everything’s good. For my birthday well probably go get some tacos and orange juice and that’ll be perfect. I don’t really wanna buy any souvenirs right now cause I don’t wanna carry anything extra around for two years, but ya I almost forgot it was my birthday. That’s the funniest thing here, telling people I’m 18 cuz they always think I’m like 26 haha

LOve you guys talk to you next week!

July 1, 2013- Matias Romero

*** we found out through a Facebook post that Andrew had been very sick and that the ward in Matias was praying for his health and caring for him. We were worried it was his hip that was infected, but as you read on you will understand.

He was instructed by Hermana Leyva (mission president's wife) to have an email conversation with his mother and answer all her questions.

Andrew is in the regular font, his Mom is in the italics. **

you there mom?

How are you?  Tell me symptoms and meds and what day this started

I have had typhoid. Just bad headaches and tummy problems, but it was the fevers that were the worst but I’m good now

When did it start?   What day.  How high fever?.  Did you see a Dr?  Where have you been staying?  Hip?

last Friday, yes I’ve seen 3. my hips completely fine. it sealed right up when i got the bandaids off and they gave me some cream to help it seal. it’s just a scar now

Was your hip an allergic reaction to the band aid?  Where have you been staying?  Blood work?  Can you get copies of the blood work?

ya my hip was allergic to the band aid, ya they took blood, I can’t get paperwork but they explained that had some of the healthiest blood they’ve seen.(they did blood work only to make sure it wasn’t malaria or west nile and all that stuff came back negative) I’ve just been at the house

Are you eating and drinking enough?

haha ya the members keep dropping off fruit and each one has their own special tea that supposedly cures anything haha. these members are awesome

when did this start? June what?

I really have no clue, like a week ago. I didn’t know I was sick until we went with an hermana who’s a nurse and she shook my hand.

 actually week and a half

I’m taking nitazoanida and ranitinidina

and I’m getting amikacina shots

hey mom I’m really fine and ya i was sick but they take care of us and stuff and I’m not dumb. the hardest thing is just not being able to work as much or have as many lessons. really don’t worry

K. Get better and be smart about hydration. Kyle wants to talk now. Love you, mom

get mom i wanna talk to her too

            I'm still here.

ask me more questions, have kyle write on the ipad and you on your phone.

Give me more hip info.  All healed? How high was your fever? Where are you emailing from?

from a little internet place they call cibers. it’s like 3 pesos for 30 minutes. kids use them to get on facebook and play videogames.

the highest fever was 104 last Thursday but that was cause we worked all day in the sun(that night the hma told me I had the fever). but that was the worst and it’s about level now, just have a little tummy trouble

How are your families?  And the twins?

twins are awesome. they’re really popular and have tons of friends and they want us to teach all of them

Are you taking meds for your hip or only for typhoid

just typhoid my hip is completley sealed. only a scar

haha so did hna leyva call you?

No, we emailed her.  I didn't “freak” out like you said last week. I didn't email her til last night when I saw the Facebook comments

did someone write something about my typhoid on facebook?

Rosa commented on a Facebook pic of you and Elder Dibble last night. Dad and I saw  at  midnight. It said something about lots of prayers for Elder Sawyer and the ward is giving him lot of fruits. We thought it was your hip.

We emailed sis Leyva last night and she emailed back this morning saying all was ok and that the ward and the Bishop were taking care of you.

We were very worried

haha no my hips good! and that’s great you kinda meet Rosa! she’s awesome she just turned in her mission papers yesterday! she is the friend of Alberto who gave us the reference and she gives us a ton of work. she’s awesome

Plastic or microfiber for the pillow and mattress protectors that you need?

I don’t know the difference? whatever keeps bugs out the best.

oh and that reminds me! 80 bucks to send a package! you guys just need to go to a dbacks game or something instead of sending me stuff. and ya i got everything in the package

Yes $80 to ship 18 lbs of food! Need anything else?

no thanks for the package but just you guys do something fun and send me pics. the only things ill need is like those mattress stuff and then maybe some old spice deodorant. and that’s all I’ll need for a while untill i need like a couple new garments. but really I’m good on food here.

ya  ok what other questions do you have? Hma Leyva wants me to tell you all.

You sent a pic last week of a building. Red with crosses -beautiful. What is it called?

haha those are literally everywhere(that was in downtown Oaxaca)  what about my health? hma leva said I needed to answer all your questions,

Don't have any more ?s.  just keep telling me stuff

gotta go I love you guys I’ll write more stories next week just don’t worry about me everything’s good. and everythings been properly diagnosed now so I’m gonna be good. I’ll right better next week! LOVE YOU GUYS have a good week

Love you and write in your journal.  Love you

**then a regular letter an hour later, here is a bit of that letter

abby! you know how you found a bird under your bed the other day, well I found a frog the size of my fist under mine the other day haha!

Dad and Mom- I promise I’m getting better. It’s not the sickness that stinks, it was just hard not being able to go out and teach and wasting time in doctors’ offices instead spending it with investigators. president leyva said satans just been hitting me hard because we’re working hard and having success but to just keep pushing through, there’s a reason for everything, and it will all work out in the end. please dont worry everything’s uphill from here. glad to hear about your eye dad, that’s great you don’t have to get surgery. Julys gonna be a healthy month!! sorry not a lot of stories this week. next week I’ll tell you guys about the soccer game and the witch doctor haha. thanks for your prayers I love you guys and don’t worry about me, the lord takes care of his missionaries!

**From Elder Dibble’s blog:

This week has been pretty crazy. Elder Sawyer got sick with Typhoid, so we've been in the house for almost a week straight. He is doing a lot better now though.

Yesterday Hermano Garrido drove us to the Military Zone so that Elder Sawyer could get some fresh air and then we ate with the Flores Family. It’s so cool there. I love visiting with them. The food they fed us was awesome, too. It was some kind of Mixtec soup with squash, and carne de reis. It actually kind of tasted like Chinese food. We are blessed to be working in a ward with such great members. They really are helping us a lot.

We have been working with Alberto and Gilberto. Over 10 of their friends showed up to play soccer in the ward activity this past Friday. They are awesome! This week we are going to go with them to teach their buddies. They are using Facebook to preach to their friends. They are awesome examples for the members here in Matias. They are also now working on reactivating the brother of the Young Woman that shared the gospel with them. How crazy!
